Airport Code for Antigua: ANU

Antigua transportation: Car rentals, Taxis, Buses

Taxis
Taxis are plentiful and available at the airport, most resorts and around St. John’s. Fares are controlled by the government but you should still agree on the fare with the driver in advance. Since most tourist oriented fares are regulated you can inquire ahead of time of your resort as to various rates and plan your budget accordingly. The taxi drivers also make great guides.

Buses
There are quite a few buses running between St. John’s and other parts of the island such as English Harbour. Trips usually run about 30 minutes and are low on cost, high on adventure. Note that there is no bus service to Dickerson Bay or other north island resort areas. Also, you should not plan on bus service on Sundays. If there is any it is spotty and infrequent at best.

Tour buses are another option and provide guides and an easy way to see the island. These can be arranged through the resort or hotel where you are staying.

Car Rentals

Ready to drive on the left side of the road? There are lots of car rental companies on Antigua to choose from. Many have an office at the airport, others may be based only in St. John’s. You will need a temporary driving permit, available at the rental agency for about $20. You will also need to show your regular drivers license. Oh, did we mention, driving is on the left side of the road. Also, there are few road signs, making it easy to get lost, and the roads are often in questionable repair with numerous potholes.

Barbuda
Part of the charm of Barbuda is in its quiet and isolated nature. This translates into a bit of a challenge for those wishing to visit there. Don’t be dissuaded, just be prepared.
There are daily flights from Antigua to Codrington Airport in Barbuda. That’s the easy part.

Once on Barbuda, there is no public transportation or taxi service. However, you may be able to locate someone willing to drive you around. Last time we checked there were a few locals offering car rentals although they seemed to change from time to time so asking around when there is the only real option.

If your resort on Antigua offers tours or transportation on Barbuda be sure to inquire as to the reputation and longevity of those offering the services, many tour seem to evaporate with little or no notice.
